Rudolf Horn for Rölf Cantilever Lounge Chair in Black Leather and Steel
Rudolf Horn for Rölf Potsdam, cantilever lounge chair, leather, chrome-plated steel, Germany, design 1964 and manufactured in 1966
DDR-designer Rudolf Horn strongly admired the iconic ‘Barcelona chair’ designed by the renowned architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969), originating from the modern epoch. Although, he acknowledged the high level of craftsmanship this piece is exemplary for, the chair is “beautiful, but so uncomfortable” states Horn. With an eye for improvement he designed his own version by coping with the stiffness of the Barcelona chair through the recreation of the crossed steel frame. This resulted in a cantilever lounge chair with a sprung base by removing the cross frame and instead he implemented a sprung base, guaranteeing a dynamic movement. He kept the other distinctive elements of the Barcelona chair in place as a way of honoring the brilliance and craftsmanship of van der Rohe. This beautiful piece is a timeless design and adds a lively vibrancy to any interior.
