Sale price$44,000.00

Mogens Voltelen for Niels Vodder, 'Copenhagen II' lounge chair, model 'MV60', oak, leather, design 1960, made 1960s/70s

The MV60 lounge chair, also known as Copenhagen II, is a rare and refined design by Mogens Voltelen for Niels Vodder. First unveiled at the 1960 Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition at Designmuseum Danmark, this chair represents a significant evolution from Voltelen’s original Copenhagen lounge chair from 1936. Over two decades, Danish furniture design evolved significantly, and when Voltelen revisited his original 1936 design, he refined it to align with the principles that were driven by the rise of Danish modernism and a shift toward functional minimalism. The 1936 version features a curvilinear and organic structure, adorned with decorative nailhead trim, emphasizing handcrafted artistry. In contrast, the 1960 version embraces a more geometric and angular design. The rear legs are now sharply curved and extended, creating a more dynamic stance. The MV60 is distinctly minimalistic, with a more structured composition and simplified geometric forms, aligning with the 1960s Danish modernist movement. The seat and tall backrest, upholstered in richly patinated black leather, provide both comfort and character. Leather straps seamlessly integrated into the front legs serve as armrests, enhancing the chair’s refined aesthetic. A true statement piece, the MV60 embodies the timeless appeal of Danish modernism, effortlessly merging organic materials with a commanding architectural form.

Danish architect and furniture designer Mogens Voltelen (1908-1995) graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He worked together with Vilhelm Lauritzen and Poul Henningsen. In 1928, Voltelen opened his own office and worked as a professor from 1959 until 1978.

The piece is in good, used condition and shows signs of wear and use common for its age.
