Marzio Cecchi Sculptural Swivel Lounge Chair in Red Braided Upholstery

Sale price$8,700.00

Attributed to Marzio Cecchi for Studio Most, swivel lounge chair, fabric, lacquered steel, steel, nickel-plated brass, Italy, 1970s

Italian-based visionary artist and designer Marzio Cecchi created this distinctive swivel chair in the 1970s, showcasing his preference for innovative construction techniques and unconventional approach to seating. The design is notable for its substantial form, with an exaggerated high back that curves gracefully, complemented by a broad seat that offers both comfort and a cocoon-like effect. What immediately draws attention is the unique braided structure, where thick strands of fabric are intricately interwoven, creating a textured, graphic surface. Cecchi often utilized this braiding technique, incorporating it into a range of his furniture designs, which became a defining feature of his style. All of these pieces were crafted by Studio Most, based in Florence.

The round, metallic base provides sturdy support for the expansive seat, deliberately exposing the mechanical elements and setting up a striking contrast with the organic texture of the braided fabric. Design in the late sixties and seventies was all about going beyond the strict conventions of modernism, with the exploration of the different qualities of materials, use of pop colors, with peculiar and symbolic appearances as the outcome. In the design world of the 1970s, it was commonplace to see seating furniture featuring a soft, organic layout and rendered in the most vibrant colors. Noted designers such as Pierre Paulin, Olivier Mourgue, Mario Bellini, Rossi di Albizzate, Tito Agnoli, Verner Panton, Cini Boeri, Gaetano Pesce, and Joe Colombo, to name a few, contributed to this tradition.

Kindly note that the fabric is in good, used condition with signs of use, such as loose seams and wear marks. Reupholstery can be done before shipping by our experienced craftspeople in our own in-house restoration atelier.
