Illum Wikkelsø Two-Seat Sofa in Brown Leather
Illum Wikkelsø, two-seat sofa, leather, stained wood, Denmark, 1960s
A design by Illum Wikkelsø featuring modest and subtle lines and shapes that emphasize the clear construction of the design. The sofa rests on a well-proportioned base that lifts the sofa up gracefully.
Illum Wikkelsø (1919-1999) is trained as a carpenter and later studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. He first worked for the Danish furniture maker Jacob Kjær and the architect Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard until 1954 when he opened his studio on the outskirts of Aarhus. Here he designed especially simple and elegant seating with great functionality, now considered classics of Danish furniture design. The style of his work varies from Kaare Klint's classicism to the soft organic craft by Arne Jacobsen.
