Illum Wikkelsø Sofa in Brown Leather and Oak
Illum Wikkelsø, sofa, model 'V11', leather, oak, Denmark, 1960s
Designed by Illum Wikkelsø, this modern sofa embodies a distinct open layout and features the use of neutral materials. Characterized by simplicity, clarity, and a deliberate absence of ornamentation, the furniture piece stands as a prime example of Scandinavian Modern Design.
Illum Wikkelsø (1919-1999) is trained as a carpenter and later studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. He first worked for the Danish furniture maker Jacob Kjær and the architect Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard until 1954 when he opened his studio on the outskirts of Aarhus. Here he designed especially simple and elegant seating with great functionality, now considered classics of Danish furniture design. The style of his work varies from Kaare Klint's classicism to the soft organic craft by Arne Jacobsen.
