Illum Wikkelsø Lounge Chair in Blue Upholstery
Illum Wikkelsø, lounge chair, fabric, teak, Denmark, 1950s
Comfortable lounge chair by Danish designer Illum Wikkelsø. The shape of the chair is characterized by the high backrest that floats over into the low, pointy armrests. A dynamic base in teak wood lifts the lounge chair up.
Illum Wikkelsø (1919-1999) was trained as a carpenter and later studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. He first worked for the Danish furniture maker Jacob Kjær and the architect Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard until 1954 when he opened his studio on the outskirts of Aarhus. Here he designed especially simple and elegant seating with great functionality now considered classics of Danish furniture design. The style of his work varies from Kaare Klint's classicism Kaare Klints to the soft organic craft by Arne Jacobsen.
