Illum Wikkelsø 'Apollo' Lounge Chair and Ottoman in Leather
Illum Wikkelsø for Ryesberg Møbler, lounge chair with ottoman, model 'Apollo', leather, lacquered wood, Denmark, 1970s
This distinctive lounge set is of high-quality both in terms of functionality and beauty. The seat embraces great comfort due to the ergonomic nature of the deep leather seat which is integrated into a concave-shaped base. The straight and strict frame stands in contrast with the round shape of the seat. This optical effect is emphasized by the deep red color in combination with the black. This set bears witness to Illum Wikkelsø's expertise in materials and construction methods.
Illum Wikkelsø (1919-1999) is trained as a carpenter and later studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. He first worked for the Danish furniture maker Jacob Kjær and the architect Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard until 1954 when he opened his studio on the outskirts of Aarhus. Here he designed especially simple and elegant seating with great functionality, now considered classics of Danish furniture design. The style of his work varies from Kaare Klint's classicism to the soft organic craft by Arne Jacobsen.
