Gianfranco Fini for New Lamp, light sculpture 'Programma', stainless steel, circa 1970

Expressive light sculpture by Italian designer Gianfranco Fini designed in circa 1970. Fini, who is known for his post-modern light designs as well as his various artistic and architectural work, created multiple pieces of lighting in the late 1960s/ early 1970s that mostly feature a steel or aluminum surface with geometrical shapes, all in limited editions. This piece of art interfaces with its surroundings. It consists of a square external steel frame that contains a metal grid with multiple mobile small metal plates. Aligned in an orderly manner the metal plates are arranged in horizontal lines within the grid's pattern. The metal plates reveal a square light panel installed behind the kinetic surface. The amount of light and the overall display can be adjusted by opening each separate plate. As a result, a dynamic, vivid play of lines is created and catches the eye. With a height and width of 104 cm (40.9 in.) Fini’s light sculpture has an impressive size.

Gianfranco Fini (1936) is a multidisciplinary Italian artist, architect and furniture designer. At the age of eighteen, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and continued his education a few years later at the Faculty of Architecture of the La Sapienza University in Rome. He joined a group of young artists who were dedicated to the avant-garde movement, later known as the ‘School of Piazza del Popolo’. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Gianfranco Fini's artistic career took off as he participated in a few exhibitions on Italian postmodern art, and eventually had the opportunity to exhibit an installation and performative project at the 1975 Venice Biennale. It was also during this period that Fini designed a series of lamps and ‘lighting sculptures’ for New Lamp; an Italian lighting manufacturer. In 1976, Gianfranco Fini founded ‘Studio Fini Architettura’ and within the same year he won a competition for the Damascus Academy of Fine Arts in Syria and for his architectural design of the Consiglio Regionale d'Abruzzo, former Palace of the Region of L'Aquila, in Italy. Fini designed various of residential planning projects, theatre and movie set designs, industrial design, and interior decorations. Among these projects is the design of the San Marco church and Ceroli theatre in Sardinia. Only recently Studio Fini Design is founded as a subsidiary of Studio Fini Architettura; a family-run interior design company that has his showroom in Casa de Campo Marina in the Dominican Republic.
