Francis Jourdain Sofa or Bench in Woven Straw and Wood
Francis Jourdain, sofa or bench, straw, stained beech, France, 1930s
This exceptional sofa is a design by French painter and cabinetmaker Francis Jourdain (1976-1958) and exudes a refined provincial charm, embodying an exquisite elegance of remarkable quality. The type of upholstery and construction, give the bench a character of its own. Traditionally, with these type of rustic benches, the fiber threads are woven, creating braided ropes that are then arranged alongside or upon each other. This imparts the piece with a visually interesting geometric pattern. The way the frame is built, in a reconstructivistic manner, is typical for French design of the the first half of the twentieth century.
