Ferdinando Meccani 'Vela' King Bed in Walnut

Sale price$29,700.00

Ferdinando Meccani for Meccani Design, 'Vela' king bed, walnut, Italy, 1967

Named Vela (Italian for "sail") Ferdinando Meccani’s 1967 bed design presents itself as both functional furniture and sculptural object. The name is no accident. Rising from the headboard, a single sweeping curve arcs upward like a tensioned sail. This sculptural element is balanced by a geometric rigor in the base: a platform supported by a discreet set of slabs that gives the impression of flotation. The bed seems to hover, untethered, despite its solid materiality. The broad headboard incorporates recessed shelving in a stepped configuration.

Vela emerged during a period of radical formal experimentation in postwar Italy, when the boundary between craft and modernism was being actively redefined. Meccani, a designer and accomplished cabinetmaker, operated at this intersection. His work often resists easy categorization, and Vela is a prime example.
