Carlo Marelli & Massimo Molteni 'Tula' Sideboard in Red Birdseye Maple
Carlo Marelli and Massimo Molteni for Borghi Giuseppe & Figli, sideboard, model 'Tula', red stained birdseye maple, glass, leather, Italy, 1980s
Designers Carlo Marelli and Massimo Molteni both graduated in Architecture from the Politecnico University of Milan. Shortly after, in 1977, they established their multidisciplinary studio, focusing on projects in architecture, industrial design, graphic design, and interior design. This sideboard is an exemplary piece of craftsmanship, showcasing refined woodworking. It features built-in construction with transparent glass shelves and a central storage area, enhanced by four elegant drawers adorned with fine leather handles. The sideboard is crafted from a special material known as birdseye maple, consisting of a striking pattern resembling small, swirling eyes that disrupt the smooth lines of grains. This graphical visualization adds a wonderful rhythmic and haptic quality to the front. The sideboard stands on cylindrical legs that contrast with its robust frame, adding a touch of asymmetry and visual excitement. Overall, the design impresses with its balanced aesthetics and sturdy construction. It can be placed as a centerpiece or against a wall, bringing a vibrant ambiance to any space.
