Bent Møller Jepsen 'FN' Lounge Chair in Dark Blue Upholstery
Bent Møller Jepsen for Simo Møbler, wingback chair, model 'FN', teak, reupholstered in “Sonar 3” by Raf Simons Kvadrat, Denmark, 1956-1959
Furniture designer and upholsterer Bent Møller Jepsen designed the 'FN' chair between 1956-1959. According to a magazine advertisement from that time, the FN chair was specifically designed to accommodate two individuals sitting together. This unique feature led Jepsen to name the chair 'FN', which is an abbreviation for 'Forenede Nationer' in Danish, meaning the United Nations. The distinctively high and dramatically shaped wingback of the lounge chair immediately catches the viewer's attention. The oversized wings of the backrest and the distinctive outward curving armrests are the defining elements of this piece. The wooden frame in teak features an open construction with clear lines. The FN easy chair can be considered as part of the same design lineage as his 'Viking' chair (1961), which appears as a more reduced, pointy variation of the former.
Bent Møller Jepsen (born in 1933) hails from a family deeply rooted in the furniture industry. His father, Simon Terpager Jepsen, owned SITAMO, a furniture factory in Jutland, Denmark from 1947 to 1976. The father was known for his passion for furniture making and his commitment to producing high-quality luxury pieces. The furniture crafted at SITAMO was meticulously created by skilled Danish craftsmen. Simon's belief in maintaining a smaller company size allowed him to prioritize high-quality and ensure customer satisfaction. SITAMO's exquisite creations adorned embassies worldwide, as well as the prestigious luxury liner 'Hanseatic' that sailed between Hamburg and New York.
In 1952, Bent Møller Jepsen graduated as an upholsterer, and four years later, he completed his education as a furniture architect at the Danish School of Fine Arts. Bent worked for both the family company Sitamo and in Sweden and other countries. He served as an advisor in different fields. Even today, Bent remains actively involved in the furniture business, which is now owned by his nephew and niece. Among his notable designs, the 'Viking' lounge chair and the 'Medalie' armchair from 1961, both manufactured by Sitamo Møbler, stand out as his most renowned creations.
