Art Deco Armoire with Decorative Illustrations by Artisan Maker
Armoire, walnut, glass, France, 1930s
This exceptional armoire undoubtedly breathes the Art Deco Period of the 1930s. The design convinces visually through its grotesque execution of ornamental arrangements on the glass panels featuring mythological, hybrid human and animal figures, such as a Centaur (Sagittarius), Amphitrite (daughter of Nereus and sea goddess) and Aquarius (man with the vase). These creatures are surrounded by various astronomical motifs, such as a sun, stars and Saturn. The doorknob is artistically decorated with a carved man reading a book, an owl and a torch. The whole construction in walnut is solidly built composed of classical proportions. For instance, the half-cut frame holds the cabinet showing a relief pattern based upon schematic fauna forms. The base functions as a pedestal and reveals beautiful, layered carved lines and is further adorned with an elegant sphere. Notable detail is the mirrored veneer doors displaying identical wooden grains, truly magnificent. Taking every stylistic realization into account, the craftsmanship of the creator is truly evident and hits the border between art and furniture. This armoire, which is almost hundred years old, bears visual interest and can serve as a monument in your décor.
