Arne Vodder Sofa in Patinated Cognac Leather
Arne Vodder for Ivan Schlechter, sofa, patinated leather, teak, Denmark, design 1953, manufactured late 1950s-1960s.
Elegant two-seat settee in admirable cognac leather and teak by Danish designer Arne Vodder and upholstered by master upholsterer Ivan Slechter. This sofa shows the great craftsmanship of Arne Vodder. The seating and back feature nice organic designs. The high back is slightly curved and runs smoothly over into the armrests that slightly flow upwards. The tufting on the back is done an unusual manner; not with buttons from the outside but by means of working from the inside. The seat is upholstered in beautiful, high quality leather that is still original. Ivan Schlechter was famous for his craftsmanship and the high quality materials he used and this is an exquisite example of his craftsmanship. The leather has aged wonderfully and developed a patina that you can only wish for.
Arne Vodder (1926-2009) should be counted among the most influential Scandinavian Midcentury designers, although he is not as well known as for instance Hans Wegner or Arne Jacobson. Once a student to famous furniture designer Finn Juhl, who later became his friend and business partner. Vodder started out as an architect who designed low-cost housing, later on he began designing furniture. Although his designs are anything but low-quality, his aim for functional design that could be used by all remained important. He designed amongst others for Fritz Hansen & Sibast.
