Adrian Pearsall Platform Sofa in Walnut and Green Upholstery
Adrian Pearsall, 'Platform' sofa, fabric, walnut, United States, 1960s
Adrian Pearsall is renowned for his distinctive sofa designs, and this piece exemplifies his innovative approach. The sofa rests on a substantial walnut frame, which extends to form integrated side tables on either end. This design feature imparts an open and inviting character to the seating area. Pearsall, often inspired by nautical themes, frequently incorporates boat-like shapes into his furniture. This influence is evident in the sofa's design, with its seat resting on a platform supported by an elongated rectangular frame, creating a floating effect. Currently upholstered in a soft green fabric, the sofa beautifully complements the natural color and grain of the walnut.
Adrian Pearsall (1925-2011), trained as an architectural engineer, was a sailor and interior designer. In 1952, Pearsall opened his own furniture company 'Craft Associates’. Pearsall designed some of the most sensuous, gracious midcentury design pieces around, sharing many of the design aesthetics by Vladimir Kagan. His pieces are characterized by flamboyant curves, upswept shapes and stretched proportions.
