Vittorio Valabrega, bar cabinet, beech, laminated wood, Italy, 1930s

A bar cabinet by the Italian artist and designer Vittorio Valabrega from the 1930s. The cabinet features an organic shaped base in black lacquer. The storage area consists of three elements, one large case with an open area in the middle, and two smaller compartments with doors on the sides. The compartments are finished with a structure of horizontal lines, also visible on the middle part that are executed in beech. The top consists of another, yet smaller, black lacquered base, and a triangular shaped element. The bar cabinet reminds of an old fireplace, giving the piece an inviting feeling. The overall piece shows some signs of admirable patina, adding even more character to the design.

Vittorio Valabrega (1861-1952) was an Italian artist and designer. He opened the "Valabrega Brothers" company in 1884. It became known for the production fine-quality liberty-style furniture. Vittorio Valabrega became the owner of the company in the mid-1890s. His furniture designs are known for using almost exclusively wood as their basic structure and using a combination of mirrors and wood in his cabinet designs. These woods are often highly polished and tinted in dark colors.
