Theo Ruth for Artifort 'Congo' Settee Sofa in Floral Upholstery and Wood
Theo Ruth for Artifort, settee, model 'Congo', lacquered wood, fabric, The Netherlands, 1950s.
This Dutch settee, designed by Theo Ruth, features a romantic floral print fabric that adds a touch of elegance to its aesthetic. Inspired by an African chair Ruth brought home as a souvenir, the design of this sofa, along with the accompanying chairs in the series, is both unique and captivating. The sofa employs a scissors-construction, allowing the seat to slide seamlessly into the back, highlighting its functional ingenuity. This piece is not only playful and comfortable but also embodies the minimalist, practical essence of Dutch design.
The innovative force behind Artifort's designs, Theo Ruth (1915-), became integral to the company's evolution when he joined in 1936. Initially starting as a cabinetmaker, he swiftly ascended to the role of the head of the design and development department in 1939. His most iconic creation, the Congo chair, not only stands as his masterpiece but also achieved remarkable sales success for Artifort.
