Poul Kjærholm Semicircular Table in Steel, Cork and Beech

Sale price£12,471.87

Poul Kjærholm and Nils Fagerholt for PP Møbler, side table with two tabletops, steel, cork, beech, Denmark, 1978.

This semi-circular table was designed by Poul Kjærholm for an interior for his close friend and architect Nils Fagerholt. It was designed for restaurant Kanalan (Canal) and it was one of the last interior projects that Poul Kjærholm worked on during his lifetime. The Kanalen Restaurant was limited in space and Kjærholm therefore designed multifunctional objects. The steel frame was designed by Nils Fagerholt and the tabletops by Kjærholm. He designed one cork inlayed top and one beech top. The interchangeable of these two tops made this piece adjustable, it could either functions as a statement piece with the large cork top or as a table that can host a few people when the smaller top is used.

Poul Kjaerholm (1929-1980) was a Danish architect and furniture designer whose approach to architecture was that of a craftsman. He developed two principles in his work: the sculptural and the architectural. He designed by intuition, his pieces resemble references to Egyptian and Greek work but also to the pioneers of the 20th century such as Bauhaus, Rietveld or Mies van der Rohe. Kjaerholm's designs are modest in means but rich in expression.
