Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen for Gustav Bertelsen, armchair, teak, niger leather, brass, Denmark, designed in 1948 and manufactured in the late 1940s

Early designed lounge chair by Danish designer duo Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen. This rare chair has been designed in 1948; a couple of years after the establishment of their design studio, and was taken into production by the Danish cabinet-maker Gustav Bertelsen. His company stood out for its exceptional manufacturing quality, and produced numerous items for well-known Danish designers as Flemming Lassen, Ingemann Hansen and more.

Beautiful original patinated cognac leather has been used to upholster this chair. The backseat shows some nice tufted details. The armrests and legs are executed in teak. Contrary to the rounded shape of the backseat, the armrests, which continue into the front legs, feature strong and sharp lines. The chair’s feet are furnished in brass.

Danish designer duo Peter Hvidt (1916-1986) and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen (1907-1993) worked together between 1944-1975. The couple, originally trained as architects, designed around 250 furniture objects. The first dismountable chair has been designed by the couple, that created an enormous boost for the Danish furniture export. In 1950, their best-known design, the AX-chair went into production by Fritz Hansen. The implementation of double bent laminated wood, a technique normally used to produce tennis rackets, was a huge breakthrough for the upscaling of furniture production as it reduces the average production time. Thanks to this revolutionary technique, Denmark became the leader in Modern furniture manufacturing.
