Sale price£19,753.32

Bruno Mathsson for Karl Mathsson, chaise longue ‘Pernilla’, sheepskin, leather, beech, fabric, brass, Sweden, design 1944

The ‘Pernilla’ chaise longue is one of the most vibrant designs by Swedish designer Bruno Mathsson. The beautifully curved frame is upholstered with soft sheepskin that invites the user to relax. On both armrests leather cushions and a soft head cushion provide extra comfort. A practical reading board can be adjusted to a preferred height and be turned outwards when not in use. The two large wheels are not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing.

Bruno Mathsson’s own ‘Pernilla’ chaise longue featured braided leather seating and was mostly used by him to take phone calls. The design for the ‘Pernilla’ originated in 1933 when Mathsson was creating the lounge chair ‘number 1’. He undertook constant adjustments to his design and finalized it in the ‘Pernilla’ chaise longue in 1944.

Bruno Mathsson (1907-1988) was born in Sweden as the son of a cabinetmaker. His interest in architecture and furniture design developed early in his life. From his first designs on Mathsson was eager to use new, innovative techniques and soon became specialist in bending of laminated wood. In 1937 he was represented at Expo Paris where he won the Grand Prix for his bed called ‘Paris’. This Expo helped Mathsson to get known worldwide. The manager of the MoMA design department got interested in his designs and started to collect and exhibit his pieces. Mathsson’s oeuvre focusses on the ‘mechanisms of sitting’. His chair designs feature curved lines that follow the human body and focus on comfort. Collaborations per example with Piet Hein, together they developed the ‘Superellipse’ table, were successful. Nowadays Mathsson’s oeuvre is known for a striking combination of functionality and well-balanced design. His legacy takes an important part in Scandinavian Modern design.
