Large Set of Ercol Beech Dining Chairs

These modern chairs belong to the so called Windsor range that were produced by Ercol in 1969. These chairs are true icons of the Ercol company and were at the forefront of post-war British contemporary design. These Puritan, simplistic chairs with five bars, are curved top rail and shaped seat are a wonderful example of design from the 1960s. The core of this chair is its fitness for purpose, closely followed by proportion materials and form. The light beech has aged in a wonderful way, giving these chairs more strength that they might have had at the time of production. The seat is made out of elm whereas the frame is executed in beech.

Ercol was once founded by Lucian Ercolani as Furniture Industries Limited in 1920. Ercolani stated about his design: 'Clearly the foremost is efficiency, the ability to fulfil the required function. After that, design must be pleasing to the eye without being ostentatious. Something which catches the eye at first glance can become very tiring to live with and a design which is deliberately exaggerated for the sake of being obvious or ornate has no place in the home.'1 Ercolani believed in the importance of solid wood such as beech or elm, he saw the transformation of a tree into a chair as a sign of respect to the tree themselves.
