Sale price£15,345.16

Jens Risom, set of ten 'Playboy' armchairs, model 'C140’, walnut, faux leather, United States, design 1958, production 1960s

The classic Playboy dining chairs by Jens Risom owe their name to their feature in the July 1961 issue of Playboy Magazine. These chairs are distinguished by their exceptional craftsmanship and striking design. Characterized by a sculptural, dynamic frame with angled contours and sleek lines, they exude a sense of grandeur due to their elegant forms and substantial size. The walnut wood used in the chairs has a warm tone and vivid grain, enhancing their natural allure. The Danish influence is evident in the clean proportions, lack of unnecessary ornamentation, and ergonomic quality of the design.

Jens Risom (1916–2016) was a Danish-born designer who brought Danish modern design to the United States. After moving to New York, Risom met Hans Knoll, marking the start of an extraordinary collaboration. Together, they introduced a fresh style to North American office and home interiors. Risom was Knoll's first designer, joining the company as it launched during World War II. Faced with the challenge of finding non-war production facilities, Risom innovatively used rejected parachute straps in his iconic 650 line. Following his military service as a translator, Risom returned to a transformed Knoll, now heavily influenced by Florence Knoll. Recognizing it was time for a new direction, Risom left to establish his own practice, Jens Risom Design.

Kindly note that the chairs are in in good, used condition with signs of age and use. For further details, we encourage you to reach out to our team of design specialists.
