Jean Claude Dresse Coffee Table with Geometric Sculptural Base in Brass
Jean Claude Dresse, coffee table, brass, glass, Belgium, 1970s
This captivating coffee table by Jean Claude Dresse is deeply reflective of the design trends that emerged in the 1970s, a period characterized by a bold embrace of luxurious materials, sculptural forms, and a departure from the rigid minimalism of the previous decades. During this era, designers sought to blend craftsmanship with a sense of artistic expression, resulting in furniture that was not only functional but also visually striking. Designers like Maria Pergay, Paul Evans, and Gabriella Crespi shaped this movement significantly.
This coffee table was commissioned for a decorator in Brussels, Belgium. With only two pieces ever produced, this design is exceptionally rare. The base is composed of two robust and volumetric elements in brass with concave and convex sides that form an architectonic foundation. The transparent glass top accentuates the intricate structure beneath, allowing the viewer to appreciate the craftsmanship and the meticulous composition of the brass forms. The material itself plays a crucial role in its visual impact – polished to a high sheen, the brass surface captures and reflects ambient light, creating a radiant effect that shifts with the surrounding environment. The design showcases a masterful balance between structure and fluidity. Its form is a study in contrasts – solid yet open, geometric yet organic.
