Ilmari Tapiovaara for Laukaan Puu Set of Four 'Pirkka' Chairs
Ilmari Tapiovaara for Laukaan Puu, set of four 'Pirkka' dining chairs, beech, pine, Finland, design 1955
This set of ‘Pirkka’ chairs by Finish designer Ilmari Tapiovaara was designed in the late 1950s, and is part of a series of furniture. The first design of this lind was a stool, and Tapiovaara quickly extended the ‘Pirkka’ series with chairs, a table, benches, cabinets and shelves. The whole series are designed between 1955-1962.
The ‘Pirkka’ dining chairs consist of solid wood. The slender legs with pointy feet lift up the seat that is made out of two pieces. Two slim rods hold a horizontal orientated backrest. All vertical parts are colored black and form a lovely contrast with the seat and backrest in stained pine wood.
Ilmari Tapiovaara (1914-1999) was trained as an interior designer and at the beginning of his career, during World War Two, Tapiovaara designed gear for the Finnish army, meaning that he got used to work with very common materials such as local woods. Later in his career he founded his own practice with his wife and had many assignments for schools and universities.
