Sale price£27,609.37

Vladimir Kagan, sofa model ‘Serpentine’, fabric, chrome-plated metal, United States, design 1950s, later production

This sofa is designed by Vladimir Kagan (1927-2016) and clearly expresses his characteristic curvaceous shapes that he implemented into many of his designs. The seating area and the backrest are organically shaped and together with the absence of strict angles, the sofa attains a sculptural expression. Therefore, this sofa can be placed in the middle of the room or away from the wall, creating a lively and dynamic flow in the room. Furthermore, the grand size of the sofa underlines the distinctive style and invites the sitter to lounge and relax. The sofa is upholstered in a beige color, imparting the piece with a tranquil and natural appearance.

Vladimir Kagan (1927-2016) was born in Germany and grew up in the United States where his father opened a cabinet shop. Later, Kagan joined the family business. Here the designer experimented with organically sculpted wood in works that became the hallmarks of his career. Kagan himself explained that his father always said 'measure three times and cut once' whereas Kagan did exactly the opposite. He also believed that there was no way that ratio could replace dumb luck. Kagan's furniture has the extraordinary ability to completely change the landscape of the room, even with a single object.
