Giuseppe Rivadossi, sideboard, stained chestnut, Italy, 1960s
This striking cabinet by Giuseppe Rivadossi pleases the eye by all means. Rivadossi, an Italian sculptor and furniture designer, is known for his hand-carved wooden designs that combine a lively surface with organic, architectural volumes. Since a young age, Rivadossi creates furniture and decorative objects that focus on the architectural aspect of structures in wood. The shape of this cabinet quickly draws attention, the upper part of this piece shows a pyramid form, and has multiple glass doors leading to storage space. The lower part of the piece displays wooden doors that create a sturdy and strong appearance. The shape and detailing of this piece are beautiful. This sideboard embodies a striking textured surface that is hand carved by gouge cut, which gives this piece its distinctive aesthetics that Rivadossi is known for. The design convinces visually through the well-balanced appearance and stabile construction accomplished by the structural arrangement of forms that have a clearly defined structure, which are artistically pleasing.
Giuseppe Rivadossi (1935) was born in Monteclana di Nave, Italy, where he still lives and works. At a young age, Rivadossi's path begins with wood carving, with works reflecting on his poetic idea of living. In 1962 Rivadossi took over the carpentry founded in 1920 by his father Clemente, which he transformed into an atelier, or rather a creative workshop. Eventually, Rivadossi and collaborators established 'Officina Rivadossi' in 1976 where he started the manufacture of wooden objects and unique modern furniture.
