Giacomo Benevelli for Missaglia 'Arabesco' Wall Light Sculpture
Giacomo Benevelli for Missaglia, 'Arabesco' wall-mounted light sculpture, metal, Italy, circa 1967
Italian designer and sculptor Giacomo Benevelli (1925-2011) designed this mesmerizing light sculpture around 1967. He is known for utilizing metal as his artistic material and incorporating biomorphic shapes in his work, all in limited edition. "Arabesco" refers to a detailed and extensive use of repeating geometric shapes that cover the surface and often evoke the shapes of animals or plants. The square frame is executed in stainless steel and contains multiple crescent-shaped cutouts that are arranged randomly. The light illuminates the curved lines, reminiscent of the moon's shape. This lighting object engages us with a captivating composition of streamlined forms that simultaneously act as the divining elements of this specific design.
