Friso Kramer Set of Eight 'Revolt' Dining Chairs in Metal and Blue Plywood

Sale price£4,283.67

Friso Kramer for Ahrend de Cirkel, set of eight dining chairs, model 'Revolt', lacquered plywood, metal, The Netherlands, 1953.

This chair named ‘Revolt’ is designed by the Dutch designer Friso Kramer (1922-2019) that received a ‘Signe D’or Prize’ at the Triennale in Milan. This design strongly bears his self-invented philosophy and I quote: 'A good industrial design must have the interaction between functional purpose, production possibility and usability. Because, if form does not contribute to function, it has no right to exist.' This chair was specifically designed for school purposes executed in a light and indestructible material. It features a transparent construction of clear lines and simple geometrical shapes, ‘less is more’ as Kramer would predicate. Although this chair is characterized by its simplicity, a lot of thinking and effort went into the development of the end product.

The frame is made of profiled sheet metal, coated in light grey. The seat and back are from laminated wood in a cool petrol blue color. These chairs display a beautiful, used condition that contributes to its overall sturdy industrial look.
