French Seltz Curved Writing Desk in Solid Elm
Ebénisterie Seltz, writing desk with return, solid elm, France, 1980s
Situated in a small French region Alsace, Ebénisterie Seltz gained prominence as a workshop recognized for crafting, among others, Pierre Chapo's designs in the 1970s and 1980s. Consequently, their own furniture creations bear the hallmark of impeccable craftsmanship and the use of premium quality materials. Their body of work is distinguished by the primary utilization of solid wood, mainly oak and elm, expertly constructed through intricate wood joinery techniques. The present executive desk is a striking example of this approach, showing affinities with the aesthetic sensibility of Pierre Chapo's designs. Crafted from solid elmwood, the table exhibits a refined sculptural design that is both sleek and contemporary in appearance. The boomerang-shaped design is intricately shaped with rounded contours and sharp defined lines. On the right side, a compartment containing two drawers, each with a characteristically recessed handle, allow for the storage of stationary and other belongings. The elmwood gives the desk its defining, distinctive look, with its pronounced grains and expressive pattern, imparting the piece with a natural and organic appearance.
