Dining chair, darkened pine, straw, France, 1930s

This lovely chair made in France in the 1930s, displays a charming and rustic elegance. The type of upholstery and construction, give the chair a character of its own. Traditionally, with these type of rustic chairs, the fiber threads are woven, creating braided ropes that are then arranged alongside or upon each other. This imparts the piece with a visually interesting geometric pattern. The way the frame is built, in a reconstructivistic manner, is typical for French design of the the first half of the twentieth century. The black lacquered backrest showing interesting geometrical recesses, adding to its allure and modern appearance. This chair shows strong similarities to the designs of French designers of that same period, like Francis Jourdain.
