Folke Ohlsson for Dux of Sweden Seat Sofa in Teak
Folke Ohlsson for Dux of Sweden, sofa, teak, fabric, Sweden, 1960s
A beautiful and rare sofa designed by Folke Ohlsson in the 1960s. This three seat sofa has a stunning teak frame, with slats of rich colored wood around the back and sides. The sofa has thick cushioning, that make the piece very comfortable. The cushions are upholstered in a subtle patterned pastel yellow with floral motifs.
Folke Ohlsson was born in 1919 and raised in Malmo, Sweden. Ohlsson moved to the United States in 1953 and quickly established Dux Inc. First the company was situated in San Francisco, and later in Burlingame. Over the years, many other designers worked for Dux Inc, among them Bruno Mathsson, Edward Wormley and Alf Svensson. Dux achieved particular success when it patented an idea that Ohlsson had thought of, the so-called “knock-down,” or “KD,” chair, a term referring to easy, flat-pack assembling. It saved Dux tons of space in warehouse storage and transportation costs and was a concept that would provide inspiration to hundreds of subsequent companies — most notably fellow Swedish brand IKEA. Apart from the great success of establishing Dux, Ohlsson also got a lot of recognition for his designs through formal recognition and awards, including Best Design in the 1964 Triennale Exhibition in Milan, as well as Sweden’s Royal Order of Vasa decoration, awarded by King Gustav VI Adolf, in the same year. Designer Folke Ohlsson died in Atherton California in 2003.
