Finn Juhl for France & Søn ‘Japan’ Sofa in Teak and Cognac Leather
Finn Juhl for France & Søn, 'Japan' sofa, model ‘137/3’, teak, brass, reupholstered in leather "Anilin H cognac by Hans Renke", Denmark, designed in 1957
In the 'Japan' series by Finn Juhl, crafted for France & Søn, the sofa serves as a captivating embodiment of Juhl's pursuit to liberate the carrying and carried elements. Inspired by the traditional Japanese construction techniques, this notion is expressed in the separation of the backrest from the wooden framework, achieved through the application of brass connections. This constructive feature adds a striking elegance to the sofa and makes it a piece you will place free-standing in the room to admire the frame from the back too. The leather is reupholstered in a fine, high-quality cognac leather by Hans Renke.
Finn Juhl (1912-1989), born in Denmark, planned on becoming an art historian when he was young. His father however decided it would be a better career move if he went to become an architect. After his architecture degree Juhl worked for ten years with Vilhelm Lauritzen. At the age of 33 Finn Juhl opened his own furniture design practice. In the 1940s he designed a number of creations that regenerated Danish furniture design, and broke with the established furniture tradition. Juhl is known as the one of the most important pioneers of Danish design. He was in fact the first Danish furniture designer to gain widespread international recognition. His work was vital to spreading the “Danish Modern” concept around the world. His designs are re-known for being exquisitely elegant, refined up until the smallest detail and extremely well executed.
