Elegant Mid-century Italian Sofa in Red and Terracotta Fabric

Sale price£19,002.62

Sofa, velvet, wood, brass, made in Cantù, Italy, 1960

This sculptural sofa, made in Cantù, Italy in 1960, is a stunning representation of Italian modernist design. Its sweeping, asymmetric silhouette captures the spirit of the era. Upholstered in rich velvet fabric in warm terracotta and red, the sofa plays beautifully with light and shadow, enhancing its sensuous curves. The subtle contrast in the velvet fabric adds depth and dimension, while the tapered legs with brass tips lend a touch of sophistication and balance.

Cantù has played a key role in the history of Italian design. Known for its master craftsmen and long tradition of artisan furnishings and cabinet making, the town became a centre of excellence where tradition and innovation came together. Throughout the mid 20th century, Cantù attracted some of the most important designers of the time. Figures like Gio Ponti, Ico Parisi, and Paolo Buffa worked closely with local workshops, creating furniture that defined an era of Italian modernism. More than a place of production, Cantù was a foundation of Italian design culture, its influence lasting well beyond its borders and still felt today.

Kindly note that this sofa has been completely restored and reupholstered in our in-house atelier, and is perfectly ready to enjoy for many years.
