Clara Porset Lounge Chairs 'Butaque' in Original Patinated Leather

Sale price£5,375.74

Attributed to Clara Porset, armchairs 'Butaque', patinated leather, cypress wood, Mexico, circa 1947

Made around 1947, these chairs hail from Mexican origins and are designed by Cuban-born furniture and interior designer Clara Porset (1895-1981). Known as Butaque chairs, these pieces are distinguished by their robust frames, characterized by pronounced curvature meticulously crafted from cypress wood, lending the chair a sculptural allure. The seat embodies a deep curve, executed in thick patinated cognac leather. Originally stemming from Mexico's mestizo culture, the Butaque chair embodies a design legacy initiated by the Spanish conquerors and later embraced and adapted by local artisans, evolving into a symbol of Mexican nationalism. Porset drew inspiration from this heritage, breathing new life into its aesthetics through various designs.

Please note that these items are in good, used condition. The leather and the wooden frame both show strong patina, created over time by use.
