Christian Krekels, coffee table, brass, wengé, Belgium, 1976

Admirable coffee table with square tabletop in ornamented brass by Belgian designer Christian Krekels in 1976. It is a bold example of Belgium design of the 1970s. The patinated tabletop in variously treated brass, features dynamic lines that arise a floral association. At the same time, the pointy way how some lines end, reminds of an animalistic background. The wavy lines lay in two directions and build a grid-like center. Krekels treated the surface in different ways to assure a unique expression. The squared tabletop lays on a square base in wengé. Admirable patina contributes to the authentic look of the piece, that the artist signed and dated on the tabletop.

Christian Krekels (1942-) is an expressive Belgian sculptor. Following his studies at the Institut des Arts Saint-Luc in Tournai, Krekels firstly focused his work on diamonds. Later in his career he shifted his oeuvre to sculptures. He worked on figurative and abstract sculptures as well as artistic coffee tables with characteristic tabletops. Krekels mainly works with different metals and like in this case, treated the brass tabletop in an unparalleled manner.
