Armand Jonckers, coffee table, malachite, brass, resin, Belgium, 1984
Gorgeous coffee table by Belgian designer Armand Jockers. Every detail of this sculptural table catches the eye. The pure combination of refined materials like the engraved brass tabletop in a delicate green malachite inlays and the architectural base, truly contribute to the extremely exquisite design. On the edge of being an ornament itself, the table has architectural qualities. The black frame in contrast to the top in brass forms a striking expression. The rectangular top with vividly etched lines seems to float above the base. The piece shows stunning patina which contributes to the overall character of the design.
Sculptor, engraver, antiquarian, mineralogist, decorator - Armand Jonckers (1939) is a creative multi-talent. Jonckers graduated in Fine Arts in Lausanne in 1957 and opened his own workshop shortly afterwards. Upon graduating, he embarked on a number of creative endeavors: dealing in antiques, studying mineralogy, collecting gems and decorating residences and boutiques, including the clothing shop Lollipop, two Saudi Arabian palaces and the club Le Fashion, a favorite of the Paris elite. From here, he began designing furniture, much of which reused vintage objects and materials. Jonckers evidences a style that some have referred to as baroque with a touch of humor.
