Gio Ponti for Cassina, pair of armchairs model 516, wood, grey upholstered fabric, Cassina, Italy, 1955.
This set of chairs is designed by Gio Ponti and manufactured by Cassina. The chairs have a few distinct features that stand out. For instance, the sculptural, upwards rising armrests and the vertical, open slats on the back. The sculptural tapered legs and the flowing, thinning and thickening lines. This set of 516 chairs by Ponti speak the design language of Ponti by means of lovely playful details and swooping, theatrical lines.
Gio Ponti (1891-1979) was trained as an architect but was also a poet, a painter, a designer of exhibitions, glass, lightning and of course furniture. He is perhaps most known for being one of the architects of the Pirelli tower in Milan, at one time the tallest building in Europe. But above all, Ponti was responsible for the renewal of Italian architect and decorative arts during the 20th century. Please note that we advise reupholstery before use. This can be done before shipping by our experienced craftsman in our own in-house restoration atelier. With high attention for the original, they make sure every piece retains its value and is ready for the many years to come. We kindly ask you to contact our design experts for further information about the endless possibilities our restoration and upholstery atelier has to offer. Of course, a locally organized reupholstery is possible as well.
