Gae Aulenti for Harvey Guzzini DH, floor lamp model ‘Monaca’, metal, plastic, rubber, Italy, design 1972
Gae Aulenti designed this inventive, sculptural lamp for Harvey Guzzini Design House in 1972. The base of the lamp is made out of metal which adds a sturdy feel. The simple design is skillfully made with the stem that, through a bowed form, melts into the curves of the domed shade. This sleek shape is emphasized by the black, rubber outline that is contrasting with the white plastic of the floor lamp. Due to the outlining, the simple lam still radiates an elegance.
Gae Aulenti (1927-2012) was an Italian designer and architect. In 1954, she graduated at the Milan School of Architecture of the Polytechnic University and was only one of two women from her class of 20. Aulenti is mostly known for her large-scale museum projects such her work for the Musée d’Orsay and Centre Pompidou in Paris. Although Aulenti worked in the post-war period of Italy, her work spans across a wide variety of styles and influences.
