Pietro Chiesa for Fontana Arte, side table, glass and ebonized wood, Italy, 1941.

A rare side table designed by Pietro Chiesa by the premier Italian producer Fontana Arte, manufactured in 1941. The circular low table brings simplicity with elegance that you can only find in Italian design. The frame consists of a hemisphere of which four conical and tapered legs diverge from. The tactility and simplicity of the design unparalleled.

Success in the construction sector attracted new investors, becoming one of the largest glass manufacturers in Italy with “Liberty” (Italian Art Nouveau) designs. In the beginning of the 1930s, Fontana hired the renowned architect-designer Gio Ponti (1891-1979) for a more modern approach. By 1932, the collaboration gave rise to an artistic glass work division of Fontana’s company; Fontana Arte. The same year, Fontana Arte acquired Pietro Chiesa’s (1892- 1948) glass workshop and this collaboration resulted in a vast number of exceptional pieces including lighting, mirrors, sculptural pieces, all characterized by a remarkable purity of form.
