Finn Juhl, ‘Chieftain’ lounge chair, teak, leather, Denmark, designed in 1949
'Chieftain' lounge chair designed by Finn Juhl, owned by Niels Vodder himself. The leather on this chair is original and in excellent, patinated condition and has a deep, warm cognac color that enhances the power of this grand masterpiece. The ‘Chieftain’ has been originally designed for the Cabinetmakers’ Guild exhibition in 1949. What makes this chair so different from Danish design at the end of the 1940s, is that it is partly inspired by the non-conformity and abstract tendencies of modern art of that same age. The ‘Chieftain’ Chair with its organic shapes distinguished and freed itself from traditional Danish furniture design.
Finn Juhl (1912-1989), born in Denmark, planned on becoming an art historian when he was young. His father decided it would be a better career move if he went to become an architect. After graduating in architecture, Juhl worked for ten years with Vilhelm Lauritzen. At the age of 33, Juhl opened his own furniture design practice. In the 1940s he designed a number of creations that regenerated Danish furniture design and broke with the established furniture tradition. Juhl is now known as the one of the most important pioneers of Danish design. He was in fact the first Danish furniture designer to gain widespread international recognition. His work was vital to spreading the “Danish Modern” concept around the world. His designs are known for being exquisitely elegant, refined up until the smallest detail and extremely well executed.
