Afra & Tobia Scarpa for FLos, pendant lamp ‘Nictea’, brass, Italy, 1961.

Afra and Tobia Scarpa pendant lamp in patinated brass. The ‘Nictea’ pendant lamp is a beautiful example of the designs that Afra & Tobia Scarpa designed in the 1960s. It shows clear reference to the ‘Lotus’ pendant lamp that the couple designed around the same time. The light source is hidden by two parts of brass. A dome-shaped top part and a bottom are connected with a gap between them. Therefore not only through the round gap on the bottom but also through this horizontal line and the lovely perforation holes that accentuate the lamp, shines the light in more directions. Both the shape as well as the details create a stunning appearance that also features an admirable patina.

Afra (1937-2011) & Tobia (1935) Scarpa both studied on the Venice Institute of Architecture. Tobia first worked for the Italian glass manufacturer Venini. From 1960 on the couple opened their own design office. Their work includes architecture and everyday items like furniture and clothing. Tobia & Afra designed for numerous major Italian and international companies like Flos, Gavina, B&B Italia, Cassina, Knoll International and many interior projects for numerous companies worldwide.
