Aldo Tura, curved corner bar cabinet, goatskin and wood, Italy, 1950s
This is a very rare light goatskin bar by the designer Aldo Tura (1909-1963). The corner cabinet is large and functions both as storage and as a bar. The bar has four doors. On top of the doors is an open space that is followed by a large bar top that protrudes on both ends. The top of the bar is what makes this piece even more spectacular. A triangle shape with two shelves. The end of the triangle is cut of and shows a small curve at the right. Due to the curved shape and the detailled forms the bar gets a certain dynamic while the goat skin surface provides a soft, natural touch. The shape is very bold and avant-garde, even for Aldo Tura who worked between the idioms of Art Deco and modernism. Tura's trademark is his use of rich materials, sculptural forms and artisanal techniques. In a time where many furniture producers were adjusting their production methods toward mass production, Tura remained committed to exquisite and traditional craftsmanship.
