Joe Colombo for Cassina, pair of easy chairs, plywood, leather, Italy, 1964.

Organically curved lounge chairs by Italian designer Joe Colombo. Once again, he accomplished an iconic chair design. The way how Colombo uses a frame out of plywood to achieve a dynamic, modern design is admirable. Curved lines of the frame as well as the two large gaps on the side characterize the look of the chair. Constructive and decorative detail at the same time is the connective detail in front where two parts of wood are interconnected. Both the seat and the armrest are upholstered in black leather.

Joe Colombo (1930-1971) was an Italian industrial and furniture designer educated at the Fine Arts Academy in Brera, Italy. Over his career, he has been an abstract painter, product designer and theorist. He has created many futuristic, pop-art and 'anti-design' objects that have created a place for themselves in the history of design.
